Landbou Radio – 12 October 2021

Do you want to be successful in your farming business? Then, don’t take shortcuts and do the right stuff. Shortcuts will cost you a lot in the long run. In dairy farming you need to focus on production, fertility and longevity in your dairy herd. In our program of 12 October, Johannes Loubser of Welgegund Dairy near Durbanville talks about the use of technology in dairy farming and the importance of daily somatic cell counts.

Christiaan de Jager, Director and Owner of O-la-la Chianina Stud near Badplaas has some information on crossbreeding between the Chianina and Nguni Cattle breed. The Nguni and Chianina breed are both heat tolerant and have a gentle disposition.

Douglas Dickson of Rietbokspruit Dairy near Lydenburg tells us more about a day in the life of a dairy farmer. They rise and shine early, long before the sun comes up in the east. Cows are milked, young calves need to be fed, milking parlours kept clean and sanitized, field work needs to be done as many dairy farmers grow their own feed. The working hours of a dairy farmer is much longer than eight hours a day.
Amelia du Preez, Technical Advisor of Devenish Nutrition has some information of the difference on sensory characteristics between grass-fed cattle and feedlot cattle.

A big shout out to all our farmers in our country, thank you for all your hard work and long hours to ensure that we have food on our tables. Happy International Farmer’s day
