The Oudtshoorn Ostrich Research farm of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture was established in 1964. South-Africa’s Ostrich industry is world renowned for its high-quality research. The research includes the development of a mathematical optimisation growth model for ostriches, breeding ostriches, nutrition requirements and welfare. In our program of 25 March, Dr Ilse Trautmann, Chief Director, Research and Technology Department at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, tells us more about the beginnings of the research farm, the annual Ostrich auction and the selection of auction birds as replacement of breeding birds to ensuring optimal production.

Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture opened the auction saying that market access for our products is a key ministerial priority.

Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, Operations and Stewardship Manager at Croplife SA, shares some interesting facts about the Subterranian Termite and the Drywood Termite.
