Agriculture in South Africa is a vitally important sector of the economy. According to Statistics SA, in a survey it conducted in the second financial quarter of 2012, 638 000 people were formally employed in this sector.

However, the number of people both directly and indirectly dependent on this sector for employment and income amounts to approximately 8.5-million in South Africa.

This sector is recognised by the SA government as being a pillar of job creation and has become an integral part of the National Development Plan, which aims to create another five million jobs by 2020.
