The Steynsdorp Farmers Associations comprises the Luswito lwesive Veg, Juluka Farmers association and Ngoko Farmers Association.  Based in the Steynsdorp area in the Great Sibande District, Mpumalanga, farming activities began in 1983. Prior to intervention by MASDT in 2011, cabbage was the only crop produced with crop rotations.  After initial work with Steynsdorp Farmers Association, the MASDT was able to assist in generating an overall amount of R362 035 by the end of the final quarter for 2012. The end of the second quarter for 2013 saw even more success with R517259 being generated.  The Association currently produces maize, cabbage, potatoes and tomatoes as major crops.

Cabbages were planted on a quarter of a Ha equalling 5000 plants per individual, every fourth week, spread around the three irrigation schemes
The first production went very well which encourage us to plant more with some individuals taking their planting to 7000 plants per cycle.
The irrigation used on the projects was the traditional furrow irrigation which at this point has been advanced to Overhead sprinkler irrigation
This is a huge step in the right direction as the furrow irrigation is wasteful and difficult to manage.  This implementation was made possible from the proceeds of the current productions. The project’s largest market comes from hawkers, who buy almost 8000 cabbages every week.
The school feeding scheme programme also formed another viable market, taking about 1800 cabbages every week.

Income generated

The overall amount of income generated from the production since the beginning of first quarter to end of second quarter totalled R517259.50
The number of jobs created amount to two per member on all three schemes, which translates to 20 to 30 jobs, periodically, depending on production requirements. Jobs are sustained due to sustainability of production and temporal workers are used at times, during production cycles.
